The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors is concerned that the newly proposed VAT on cosmetic procedures will discriminate against vulnerable women and certain ethic groups. The BACD has warned HM Revenue & Customs that by implementing the VAT and charge for patients of cosmetic procedures like tummy tucks, liposuction, and a procedure called micro liposuction, it could victimise those who have been left with disfiguring dermatological conditions such as acne scarring. The organisation, which encourages regulation within the industry and to make cosmetic medicine safer and more ethical for the general public, issued a statement of their opinion on the subject and regarded it as an aggressive stance.
Dr Samantha Gammell, President Elect of the BACD, is reportedly appalled that HMRC inspectors in Wales are demanding to review confidential patient records for proof or their medical needs. Presently, when Brits seek surgery from a doctor they are treated without judgement or prejudice and with total discretion. However, the association is worried that the obscene invasion of privacy could do otherwise than protect the health of the patient and that the public will be put off seeking the help they need. The non-for-profit union argues that there is no legal basis for the approach and that they will fight for patients’ rights. So if you desire chin liposuction to reverse the aging process, don’t delay and seek expert help.
The new government guidelines on VAT states that doctors performing purely cosmetic operations must register for VAT and pass the charge onto patients to boost public finances. Therefore it is reported that the cost of facelifts and breast enlargements in the UK could rise by 20%. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, over 9,000 breast enlargements took place in 2010 alongside over 3,000 tummy tucks and 5,000 facelifts. So the amount the government is going to earn is astronomical, especially given the fact that the average cost of a facelift is £6,000.
