Cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery has two main goals. The first is to restore damage to patients as a result of a birth injury, genetic defect or as the result of an injury or trauma. This kind of restorative surgery is often very complicated but ultimately incredibly rewarding for both the surgeon and the patient. Many patients who have suffered from a disfigurement have had successful surgery, which has allowed them to live lives more closely to how they had imagined.

The other type of cosmetic surgery is for people who may not have anything wrong with them medically but who have always been unhappy with their appearance. This kind of surgery for purely cosmetic reasons has often been, and still is by some, frowned upon. People who have this kind of cosmetic surgery are often seen as vain but this is really generalising and in many cases very cruel.

For example, if a patient has ears that stick out, this may not cause them any kind of medical difficulty or impact upon their hearing or any other sensory perception. On the face of it, it would seem that surgery to correct them would be unnecessary. But then imagine it is you that has had these ears all your life and all that time you have had to deal with people staring at them, teasing you or even bullying you just because your ears are slightly different through no fault of your own. This casts the problem in a different light. If there is a simple, safe and effective procedure to have this remedied would you not consider having it done? Of course, most people probably would and in these terms would not begrudge anybody else the opportunity to do the same.

This second kind of cosmetic surgery, for purely aesthetic reasons is just as valid as the first. To suffer a life of emotional torment and low self-confidence because of some aspect or other of your physical appearance is not pleasant. And let’s be honest, most of us would like to change at least one thing about our appearance if we could.

Cosmetic surgery treatments, and even cosmetic dentistry treatment such as tooth whitening, are rapidly becoming more and more acceptable in our society and this is a good thong for the thousands of people it has helped over the last ten years.
